Service Description

This eight-week intensive taught by Luke Fox will explore The Sanford Meisner Approach using Larry Silverberg’s “Workbook One”. Meisner’s philosophy was to teach actors to “live truthfully under imaginary circumstances”. This is done by sanding down the psychological mountain-making of an actor’s work and instead focusing on the simplicity of instincts, through repetition. Throughout the class, groups of two as the “Partners,” will be taken through a series of acting exercises. Like building blocks, with each step we’ll lay the groundwork for what is next and only the doing of each exercise will allow the possibility of what is to follow. As Sandford Meisner told his students, “the seed to the craft of acting is the reality of doing.” We will explore the reality of doing by delving into exercises, starting with simple repetition. This approach is very meticulous, and yet, organic and healthy. Following this process, our emotions will come freely, as a side benefit, a gift, when our attention is on something else and that something else is what we are doing. When our attention is not on being emotional, our emotions suddenly become much more available. Luke Fox has been a working tv, film and theatre actor for over 10 years. He has a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting and Directing, and has received formal training in The Meisner Technique, Uta Hagen, The Method, Practical Aesthetics, among many others. Before moving to Nashville three years ago, he worked in Philly as an actor and has had the pleasure of teaching acting technique workshops. His desire to teach is inspired by the great teachers and mentors who have been in his life, inspiring him to mindfully create, collaborate, and tell stories with care. As Sanford Meisner says, the actor's goal is to "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances." Luke wishes for himself and others to pursue authenticity in every creative endeavor, paring away the false-self, and empowering instinct.
