**Pre-requisite: Level 1: Intro to Voice & Speech This course equips actors with the tools to master the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Actors develop a deep understanding of phonetics, enhancing vocal versatility. Phonetics allows the actor to make educated choices that serve the text as well as connects the actor to the heartbeat of their character. Course Objectives: 1. Phonetics Fundamentals: Establish a foundation in phonetics for speech sounds. 2. IPA Symbols and Notation: Proficiency in interpreting and using IPA symbols. 3. Phonetics Integrated with Text: Apply Phonetics to poetry. This class takes place on Zoom. Students are expected to have their camera on during class. The text book will be provided via PDF. This course is taught by award-winning Voice & Speech teacher Susan Finch. Susan Finch has been teaching voice and speech for more than 25 years. She coaches productions on Broadway (Girl from The North Country, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Off- Broadway (The Public Theater, Signature Theater, MTC, The McCarter Theater, Red Bull) as well as for television and film. She has taught at The Juilliard School, where she is an alumna of their Drama Division. At NYU’s Atlantic Theater Acting School, as Head of the Speech Department, she created their undergraduate speech-training curriculum.
